The Velgam Raja Maha Viharaya was founded over two thousand years ago by King Devanampiya Tissa—the first Buddhist monarch of Sri Lanka. He planted a Bodhi tree sapling here, marking the temple’s inception. Later kings including Bhatikabhaya, Sanghabodhi, and Vijayabahu expanded and embellished the complex. Tamil-language stone inscriptions found on site attest that Tamil Buddhists worshipped and protected the monastery. The temple fell into ruin during Chola invasions and was overgrown for over a millennium.

Historical Significance of Welgam Raja Maha Viharaya

The Welgam Raja Maha Viharaya was founded over two thousand years ago by King Devanampiya Tissa—the first Buddhist monarch of Sri Lanka—who planted a sacred Bodhi tree sapling to mark the temple’s beginning. Kings Bhatikabhaya, Sanghabodhi, and Vijayabahu later developed and expanded the site.

Unlike other temples, Welgam Vehera is renowned for the Tamil inscriptions found on-site, confirming that Tamil Buddhists worshipped and protected the temple. However, during the Chola invasions, the temple was destroyed and remained hidden in overgrowth for centuries.

Rediscovery of the Temple

In the 20th century, as Sinhalese communities began to repopulate the North-East, the temple was rediscovered in 1951 by Ven. Madue Rathanawansa Thissa Nayaka Thero. He built a small residence and began restoring the ancient site.

Temple During the Civil War

During the civil war, the temple and the surrounding village were frequently targeted. Over 400 Sinhala families lived in the village, and many were displaced. Ven. Ampitiya Silawansa Thissa Nayaka Thero, the current chief prelate, remained alongside a few villagers despite ongoing threats.

Eventually, the Sri Lankan Army established a camp on the temple grounds for protection. In 2000, the temple faced severe attacks, and the chief prelate himself was injured. Yet, through spiritual resilience, the site was revived, and after the war, complete restoration began.

මෙම වෙල්ගම් රජමහා විහාරය ඉදිකොට තිබෙන්නේ මීට වසර දෙදහස් දෙසීයකට පමණ පෙර ලංකාවේ පළමු බෞද්ධ රජතුමා වන දේවානම් පියතිස්ස රජතුමන් විසිනි. එතුමා විසින් දෙතිස් පලරුහ බෝධි අංකුරයක් රෝපණය කරමින් විහාරය ආරම්භ කරන ලදී. පසුව භාතිය, සංඝබෝධි , විජයබාහු වැනි රජවරුන් මෙම විහාරය සංවර්ධනය කළහ.

මෙම විහාරස්ථානයට වටිනාකමක් ලබා දෙන්නේ දමිළ බෞද්ධයින් , මෙම විහාරයට පුද පූජා පවත්වමින් ආරක්ෂා කළ බවට ඇති දමිළ ශිලා ලිපි වේ. නමුත් පසුව සොළී ආක්‍රමණයන් හේතුවෙන් විහාරය විනාශ වී දීර්ඝ කාලයක් වල්බිහි වී ඇත.

විහාරය නැවත සොයා ගැනීම

20වැනි සියවසේදී, දකුණේ සිට උතුරු නැගෙනහිරට නැවත පදිංචිවූ සිංහලයින් සමඟ, මාදූවේ රතනවංස තිස්ස නායක ස්වාමින්වහන්සේ විසින් 1951දී විහාරය නැවත සොයා ගෙන කුඩා ආවාසයක් ඉදිකොට , නැවත විහාරස්ථානය ආරම්භ කොට ඇත.

යුද සමයේ විහාරස්ථානය

යුද්ධ සමයේදී විහාරය හා ගම්මානය ත්‍රස්තයන්ගේ පීඩා වලට ලක්විය. ගම්මානයේ පදිංචිව සිටි සිංහල පවුල් බොහෝ දෙනෙක් ප්‍රදේශය හැරදා පිටත්ව ගියහ. සුලු පිරිසක් හා විහාරාධිපති ස්වාමින් වහන්සේ පමණක් ඉතිරි වන්නට විය.

යුද හමුදාව විහාර භූමියේ ආරක්ෂක කදවුරක් පිහිටුවූ අතර 2000දී විහාරය දැඩි ප්‍රහාරයකට ලක්විය. නායක හිමියන් ත්‍රස්ත ප්‍රහාරයකට ලක්වූවත්, පසුකාලීනව විහාරය නැවත පුණර්ජීවනය විය. යුද්ධය අවසන් වූ පසු විහාරය නැවත සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම නවීන කළේය.
